Topics for Concurrent Sessions

September 21-23, 2011

Concurrent sessions on Curriculum and Instruction

Peace-building is a long-term task of building peaceful communities and relationships. Concurrent sessions on INSTRUCTION aim to help participants appreciate that peace education is a concrete pathway to the building of a culture of peace. It is education that builds awareness, concern and action in response to direct, structural, socio-cultural and other forms of violence in our society. Sessions will delve on various key themes that include respect for life, nonviolence, solidarity, human rights and dignity, respect for diversity, economic equity, gender fairness and environmental care and sustainability.

Because peace education is as concerned with the "how" of education, concurrent sessions on instruction will also demonstrate teaching-learning approaches that are compatible with the goals of peace. These approaches are holistic, participatory, cooperative, experiential and caring. And since the "medium is the message", peace education mentors should radiate the values that they teach. They should serve as models for the qualities and skills they are helping young people to develop. Some of the concurrent sessions will touch on the attributes of a teacher for peace that they may be credible agents of the peace message.
